The kids and I have recently aquired and obsession with collecting photos of unusual signs... we make Tom stop so we can take the perfect shot. So, when we were down in Melbourne visiting one of the other exchange families, we thought we would share our sign photos with them. We soon found out that they were doing the same thing. When they showed us their collection of photos, we realized that they had us beat!!! Their collection was quite interesting, and now it has given us a bit of a challenge.
Here are our first sign pictures.
The signs of animals that are indigenous to Australia...never to be seen in Canada... catches our eye. What they must think of our moose crossing signs.
The snake wildlife sign might be seen in Canada, but we thought we would include it for the family members who we know love snakes so much.
Jocelyn and I find the toilet signs interesting. I think it might be just us, but the word toilets is just so visual... it still makes us laugh when we see these signs.
Of course there is no garbage in Australia, it's rubbish! We love this word... saying it makes us feel very proper.
Jocelyn found the pool sign. I was wondering why she wanted to take a picture of this one. It is just a pool sign? But she pointed out the obvious to a 9 year old... where in Canada would you see an outdoor pool open from November to April!
This is my personal favourite so far. Mostly because of its location. We did not see this sign at an airport, but halfway down the Great Ocean Road. We stopped at a lookout and when we pulled back onto the road this sign was a head of us, just to let us know where to drive. I guess they have had some people forget where they are.
Foreigners do need some help driving on Aussie roads though... We were having a good laugh with some friends, when someone said to us to beware of the driver in a round about with their windshield wipers on... You would have to drive in this country to understand this one. In the first few days of driving whenever, Tom approached a round about, and wanted to turn, he accidently switched on the windshield wipers instead of the indicator. This is a good way to tell that foreigners are in the car ahead of you.
We have decided to update this page as we continue throughout the year and find more signs.
